| Infographic about Water Conservation: why we save water and how to do it! |
OPTION 2: Why and how should we conserve water now to ensure that we can meet future needs? Create an infographic to show your water conservation recommendations for how we can adjust our water use to meet growing demands. Review the information provided in the Infographics Datasets and consider the population and water use patterns over the past five years.
What is This About?
In order to raise awareness of the earth's finite water source, this project will be an infographic. Not many people realize that our water supply is, in fact, limited and that we waste water everyday. Water can be recycled; however, every time it goes through the recycling process chemicals are used each time. To keep our water pure and drinkable there are ways to preserve water and keep it from going through the recycle process excessively. This infographic is to show the viewers that they need to take action and suggests ideas on how to save water.
What are the Key Issues?
As mentioned before, water is a limited resource that is a necessity for people and their everyday living. Only 1% of the earth's water is fresh water, and 2% of it is frozen. To add to this, around 7 billion people are sharing this water unevenly. Every time we use water, it gets recycled and chemicals are used to purify it. These chemicals can build up in our water and it can be dangerous to consume. Each year 3.6 million people die from a water-related disease; a child dies from water-related diseases every 15 seconds. Preserving water and keeping it from the cycle can reduce these rates. Lastly, preserving water can reduce not only our water footprint (the result of how much water is used), it can reduce our carbon footprint as well. About 6.5% of energy is used to move water from one place to another. Preserving water can reduce these footprints, and in turn reduce the global warming rates in which the icecaps (one source of freshwater) melt and mix with the saltwater. This further reduces our water resource.
Key Findings
Key Findings
- On average, 10 gallons per day of your water footprint (or 14% of your indoor use) is lost to leaks.
- Nearly 22% of indoor home water use comes from doing laundry.
- A cup of coffee takes 55 gallons of water to make, with most of that H2O used to grow the coffee beans.
- The water required to create your laptop could wash nearly 70 loads of laundry in a standard machine.
- Less than 2% of the Earth’s water supply is fresh water.
- Only 1% of the earth’s water is available for drinking water. 2% is frozen.
- An average family of four uses 881 gallons of water per week just by flushing the toilet.
- Turning off water while shampooing and conditioning hair can save 50 gallons a week.
- Choosing a low water use plant when replacing or adding a flower or shrub can save 550 gallons each year.
- The world water supply is finite.
- The water we use in our kitchens does not indicate an endless supply of safe, clean water. This water will be treated, and eventually will be returned to us, but in a chemically altered state from the previous time we used it.
- The world has .4% of the water supply to share between 7 billion people.
